Welcome to Bently's World
The World of Bently Strange, Esq.

Hello there!

Bently wishes a hearty welcome to all intrepid cyber-ghosts.

Pause your itchy trigger finger for just a little while and tarry from your journey through the ephemeral labrynth of hopes, dreams, rip-offs and the merchandise of sin that we call the world wide web.

It's vast, it can be weird and sometimes wonderful ...ah, but is it not true that we have witnessed a gradual and disappointing degeneration of its status to that of a endless tacky electronic shopping mall...?

...still, the internet remains (in principle) an exciting space for new media art.

For some years now Bently has, from time to time, connected his brain to a symbolic morphology materialiser and the fetid outpourings of his feverish imagination have begun populating this dark empty corner of the labrynth with strange visions.

Herein you will find a growing collection of experimental multimedia art - mostly created using shockwave technology.

There is no commercial agenda here, simply an exploration of the possibilities for using the web creatively, poetically and philosophically.

Bentlys World contains no specific message except perhaps the importance of curiosity, though you may find that experiencing his world may occasionally challenge your cosmic and political attitudes.

Explicit language warning.

If you can see the animation above, then you have the Shockwave plug-in installed, so turn up your sound 'cause you're nearly ready to go on.

BUT FIRST, take a moment to read the section below - (because you'll enjoy your glimpse of Bently's mind much more), and once you're through reading the technical notes - choose from the sections in the menu at the top, and then select an item.

  • IMPORTANT NOTES :

  • SEE ANYTHING IN THAT WINDOW, ABOVE ON THE RIGHT?

    1. This site consists mainly of Shockwave animations. You must have the Shockwave plug-in to view the animations on this site. It's worth it just to see the kind of animations and interactive art possible with this exciting but relatively unexplored technology. If you see nothing in the box above you can download install the Shockwave player here:

  • Macintosh OS X

Windows XP Click to download Shockwave Player for Windows XP

    2. Please note also that this site also uses speech synthesis.

Windows XP or Mac OSX is required to hear the computer-generated voices. Most of the animations will make little sense without the voice component. Mac users may need to activate their speech synthesis, using System Preferences > Speech. Windows users can read an overview of speech technology here, and technical information about how to activate speech synthesis on Windows XP here.

  • 3. Turn on your sound.

  • 4. Choose a section from the top menu and make a selection.
